Travel agent or booking direct: what is the difference?

Booking direct means you research, compare and book each part of a trip yourself, on airline, hotel and cruise line websites. Working with a travel agent means an advisor does that work with you, coordinates flights, hotels, cruises and transfers into one plan, and stays your point of contact before and during the trip. At Traveland, the time you would spend on research and booking goes back to you. We are a family-owned travel agency in Connecticut, planning trips since 1978 as a member of the Signature Travel Network.

The short answer

What does a travel agent do that booking direct does not?

The difference is mostly time, coordination and help when plans change.

Time

An advisor handles the research, comparison and booking that can take many hours on your own.

One plan

Flights, hotels, cruises, tours and transfers fit together, with every confirmation in one place.

Experience

Advice from people who know the cruise lines, tour companies and destinations firsthand.

A person to call

When a flight changes or a plan needs adjusting, you have one contact who already knows your trip.

Which one suits you

When does a travel agent make the most sense?

Booking direct works well for some trips. These are the ones where an advisor helps most.

Colorful cliffside houses of Manarola in the Cinque Terre

Cruises and tours

Choosing a line, ship, cabin or tour style, and arranging flights and hotel nights around it.

Rhine village church and vineyards above the river

Multi-stop trips

Several countries, cities or hotels, with the connections and transfers in between.

Two skiers resting in the snow above the Alps

Families and groups

Rooms, dates and preferences for several travelers, kept in one plan.

Questions

Questions travelers ask

Booking direct means you research and book each part of the trip yourself. A travel agent does that work with you, coordinates every booking into one plan and is your point of contact if something changes.

There is no charge for an initial consultation with Traveland. We explain any costs for your specific trip before anything is booked.

Booking direct works well for simple trips you know well, such as a familiar hotel or a short domestic flight.

We plan ocean, river and expedition cruises, escorted and custom tours, all-inclusive resorts, golf trips and group travel around the world.

You contact us, and we work with the airline, hotel, cruise line or tour company on your behalf.

Send an inquiry from any page on our site or call either office. We start with a conversation about where you want to go, when and how you like to travel.

Planning a trip like this can take many hours of research, comparison and booking. We do that work for you, draw on decades of experience to get the details right, and keep every confirmation in one place, so you can spend that time looking forward to the journey.
