Apply for a Passport

You can apply for a passport at many Post Offices™ around the country. At some locations, they will even take your passport photos for an additional fee. To renew your passport, you must be 16 or older and eligible to use Form DS-82.

What should you bring?

1. Your Completed Application

You can complete it online through the State Department’s web site, or print and complete it by hand. New applicants, renewals, name changes or corrections, and lost or stolen passports each require a different application.

2. Two Types of Identification, with Copies of Each You’ll need one proving U.S. citizenship…

1. Previously issued, undamaged U.S. Passport

  • 2. Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county, or state
  • 3. Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Birth Certificate
  • 4. Naturalization Certificate
  • 5. Certificate of Citizenship


… and one current I.D. Previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport


  • 1. Naturalization Certificate
  • 2. Valid driver’s license
  • 3. Current Government ID (city, state, or federal)
  • 4. Current Military ID (military and dependents)

3. One Passport Photo

Your photos should be in color, identical, and taken within the past 6 months. They should be 2″ x 2″ with a full-face, front view (head should measure between 1″ and 1 3/8″), and a plain white or off-white background. For a $15 additional fee, some Post Offices can take these for you.
